2003: The Yankees defeat the Cardinals‚ 5-2‚ as Roger Clemens becomes the 21st pitcher in history to win 300 games. Clemens finishes with 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings to become the 3rd pitcher to surpass 4‚000 for his career.

1948: The Yankees retire Babe Ruth’s No. 3 jersey in the Babe’s final appearance at Yankee Stadium at the 25th anniversary of the venue. The Silver Anniversary crowd of 49‚641 cheer as Mel Allen introduces the Bambino. After the ceremonies and a two inning game between Old-timers in which the team of 1923 defeat a team of all-stars from later years 2-0‚ the Yankees beat the Indians 5-3. Joe DiMaggio collectss two triples and Phil Rizzuto and Yogi Berra add homers to back Ed Lopat’s pitching. Lopat is now 13-3 lifetime versus the Tribe.

2009: Floundering righty reliever Brian Bruney is reassigned to the AA Trenton Thunder.

2006: The Yankees and Indians, the two highest scoring teams in the ML, play to a 1-0 decision with the Yanks prevailing on Robinson Cano’s homer off of Paul Byrd. Chien-Ming Wang (7-2) is the winner. This is the first time that the highest scoring team in the majors has beaten the second-highest in a 1-0 game since 1964 (Twins 1, Yankees 0) and only the 4th time since 1900. For Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams, it is his 2000th ML game.

2004: Yankee fans and David Wells have a reunion amongst themselves as Boomer returns to the Stadium in a Padres uniform. Wells pitches brilliantly for seven, as does Javy Vazquez through eight, but the Yankee righthander is the hook, down 2-0 after a Khalil Greene home run and a Terrence Long double. Then Hideki Matsui and Kenny Lofton (pinch hitting for Tony Clark) homer back-to-back with two down in the ninth to forge an improbable tie. The visitors then jump on Brett Prinz for three in the top of the 12th, and it is with a roar that the crowd greet the emergence of 2001 Yankee culprit Jay Witasik from the San Diego pen in the bottom half. Ruben Sierra follows RBIs by Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi, and Jorge Posada with a sac fly to close the 6-5 Yankee victory.

1996: Yankees reliever John Wetteland is quoted as saying he’ll leave the Yankees at the end of the season. He later denies the comments but does indeed depart for Texas after the World Series.
1988: The Yankees whip the Red Sox 12-6 in Boston, though Yankee starter Richard Dotson gives up Jim Rice’s 200th Fenway homer. Rice joins Ted Williams and Yaz as the only ones to do it.

1970: In a 9-4 Yankee win over Kansas City‚ Yankee infielder Gene Michael successfully pulls the hidden ball trick on the Royal’s Joe Keough in the 6th after the KC outfielder singles in the tying run. Michael will pull it again next month.

1953: The Yankees overwhelm the Indians 9-4‚ for their 16th straight win. The Tribe now trail by 8 1/2 lengths. Ed Lopat is on his way to his 7th straight win when the Yankees rout Bob Feller in the 4th inning‚ running the ace’s record to 29-37 versus New York‚ the only team against whom he has a losing record.

1937: In an afternoon doubleheader at St. Louis‚ the Yanks and Browns slug it out‚ with New York winning the opener 16-9 by scoring 14 runs in the last 4 innings. The Yanks score 7 runs in the 9th inning off Jim Walkup and Lou Koupal to put it away. The barrage continues in the nitecap‚ with Joe DiMaggio connecting for 3 straight homers‚ the third off starter Julio Bonetti to tie the score with two out in the 9th. The game is called after 11 innings with the score at 8-8. On the afternoon‚ there are 9 home runs: three each by DiMag and Harlond Clift‚ and Tony Lazzeri‚ Bill Dickey‚ and Joe Vosmik each clouting one.

1927: Murderers’ Row roll over the Indians 14-6 at the Stadium. Ben Paschal (below) belts 2 homers‚ a triple and double and scores 5 runs to lead the Yankees. Tony Lazzeri‚ Joe Dugan and Pat Collins also homer, the latter’s blow a grand slam. Herb Pennock is the winner for New York.

1924: In the final contest of a three-game set with Detroit‚ the first-place Yankees take a 10-6 lead in the top of the 9th. With one out, Babe Ruth takes a pitch in close before fouling out. Bob Meusel is then hit in the back with a pitch by reliever Bert Cole‚ and charges the mound. Players from both teams start swinging‚ with Ruth and Cobb pushing each other. Fans rush out of the stands‚ eager to mix it up with players‚ police‚ and each other. The fight goes on for nearly 30 minutes before umpire Billy Evans‚ unable to clear the field‚ finally forfeits the game to New York. Cole and Meusel are suspended for 10 days; Meusel is fined $100‚ and Cole and Ruth $50 each.

1921: At New York, Babe Ruth hits two homers and pitches the first five innings for New York‚ and the Yanks hang on for a 13-8 victory over Detroit. The Babe gives up 4 runs but strikes out Ty Cobb and is credited with the victory. Ruth’s second blast goes 460 feet into the right center field bleachers of the Polo Grounds‚ the first home run ever hit to that spot. The Bambino retires the Georgia Peach twice today‚ and Cobb’s bottom-line batting average versus Ruth drops to .354 (23 for 65).
