1973: Taking the mound against the Rangers, Yankee starter Fritz Peterson injures himself fielding a bunt single by leadoff hitter Dave Nelson and is replaced by Fred Beene. Beene goes the rest of the way, allowing four hits, and getting the 3-2 win when Gene Michael delivers a 9th inning game-ending single off Texas starter Jim Merritt.

1972: The Yankee ownership and New York City sign a 30-year lease on Yankee Stadium that will keep
the team in the Bronx till 2002. The City agrees to spend $24 million
on renovations‚ but the actual costs will approach $100 million.

1956: Mickey Mantle’s 1st-inning opposite field home off Camilo Pascual jumpstarts the Yankees to a 12-2 win over the Senators. Mantle is now 9 games ahead of Babe Ruth’s 1927 pace.

1954: The Yankees spot the host Tigers a four-run lead‚ tie it up‚ then watch as Detroit win it 10-8 in 10 innings. Mickey Mantle has one homer‚ off Billy Hoeft‚ and just misses on a titanic opposite field drive that curves foul before leaving the stadium.

1953: Yankee southpaws Whitey Ford and Bob Kuzava hurl 1-0 and 3-0 shutouts respectively against the White Sox. Kuzava gives up only Bob Boyd’s double in the 9th. The Sox now trail New York by 8 1/2 games.

1948: 73‚484 fans turn out at Cleveland Stadium to watch the Indians and Yankees square off for a pair. Trailing in the opener‚ an ailing Lou Boudreau hits a bases loaded pinch single in the 7th to tie the game‚ and Satchel Paige gets the win in relief‚ 8-6. Steve Gromek goes 7 innings in the nitecap to give the Indians a 2-1 win over rookie Bob Porterfield‚
making his ML debut. The Indians and the A’s are now tied for 1st
(60-39)‚ with the Yankees 2 games back and Red Sox in 4th place‚ 2 1/2
out.

1934: Hall of Fame manager Wilbert ‘Uncle’ Robbie’ Robinson dies at the age of 71. Robinson finished his playing days as the starting catcher for the Baltimore Orioles (the franchise that would move to New York and become the Highlanders in 1903) in 1901 and 1902.

1924: Babe Ruth slams his 37th and 38th homers of the year, adds a triple and draws 2 walks‚
but it is not enough to keep the Yanks from falling to Cleveland,10-8. Joe Bush and
Bob Shawkey are the victims of the Tribe’s offense. George Myatt’s 2-run homer is the difference in the 3-run 9th. Myatt also has a single and double.

1920: Detroit’s Howard Ehmke whitewashes the Yankees 1-0 in, and takes just 1 hour‚ 13 minutes to do it‚ for the
shortest 1-0 game in  AL history. With no outs and 2 on
in the 5th inning‚ the Yanks fail to capitalize as Ping Bodie falls for the hidden ball trick applied by second baseman Ralph Young.

1913:  The Yankees acquire third baseman Fritz Maisel  from Baltimore (IL) for $12‚000 plus third baseman Ezra Midkmiff (batting .197) and outfielder Bert Daniels (.216). Daniels will return to the majors next year with the Reds and improve his average by 3 points.
