2002: At the Stadium, Rangers’ starter Aaron Myette’s first-inning, bases-loaded walk to Jorge Posada scores Jason Giambi and ties the game at 1-1, after Alex Rodriguez had homered off Roger Clemens. Six innings later Giambi’s long home run to right off lefty Juan Alvarez is the difference in a 3-2 Yankee win.
1983: Brett Gardner is born. Happy 27th to Speedy Gardzales!
1977: Catfish Hunter notches his final win of the year‚ an 11-1 four-hit victory over the Twins. New York support Hunter with homers by Roy White, Mickey Rivers, Chris Chambliss and Bucky Dent.
1968: Mel Stottlemyre and the Yankees top Denny McLain, 2-1, for one of only 6 losses (against 31 wins) that the Tiger ace will suffer this year.
1960: Despite Roy Sievers’ 2 homers and a double‚ the Yankees beat the White Sox 3-2‚ dropping Chicago 1 1/2 games off the pace and into a second place tie with the Orioles. Art Ditmar is the winner over Herb Score.
1951: Against Cleveland’s Early Wynn, Gene Woodling cracks his third homer off the Tribe ace this year‚ as the Yanks win 2-0. Woodling went deep on Wynn on June 24th‚ July 24th and today. Mickey Mantle makes his first appearance since his recall from the minors.
1904: The Highlanders’ Wee Willie Keller collects 2 inside-the-park homers against the St. Louis Browns in a 9-1 win at Hilltop Park.
