8/31 in Yankee History

2004: The Indians massacre the Yankees 22-0, tying  a record for the most lopsided shutout in Major League. Omar Vizquel has 6 hits for Cleveland, while Javy Vazquez is knocked out early and takes the loss.

2003: Roger Clemens becomes the first pitcher to win 100 games at Fenway when he defeats the Red Sox 8-4. in what at the time appears to be his last regular-season start there. The Rocket’s career record at the venue up to this point is 100-55 record in 199 appearances; no other pitcher has
recorded more than 71 victories at the park

1995: Paul O’Neill homers in his first 3 at bats and drives in 8 runs in leading the Yankees to an 11-6 win over California.

1993: As the trade deadline approaches, the Cardinals ship  closer Lee Smith (below) to the Yankees in exchange for pitcher Richard Batchelor.

1977: Sparky Lyle records his third win in three games‚ all won on late-inning Yankee homers. Graig Nettles’ second round-tripper of the game gives New York a 5-4 win over Seattle.

1974: The Yankees deliver a 25-hit barrage against the White Sox en route to an 18-6 victory. Roy White has 5 hits‚ while Thurman Munson (who also has 5 RBI) and Gene Michael have 4 apiece. Munson has 5 RBI.

1966: Bobby Richardson retires from baseball at the age of 31.

1956: President Dwight D. Eisenhower is in attendance as Jim Lemon of the Senators swats  3 consecutive homers off Whitey Ford in a night game. The Yankees still prevail, however,  6-4. Mickey Mantle has a homer off Camilo Pasqual.

1954: The Indians beat the Yanks 6-1 to record their 26th win in August, tying the 1931 A’s for most wins in a month. Bob Grim takes the loss for the Bombers.

Off the field, Claudell Washington, who would hit the 10,000th hoime run in Yankee franchise history in 1988, is born. Happy 56th to the milestone setter!

1948: At the Stadium‚ the Yanks score 4 runs in the 8th, but the Browns come back with 5 in the 9th off Joe Page to make it close. New York eke out the win, though, 10-9. First baseman Tommy Henrich hits a homer and executes an unassisted DP to help Allie Reynolds to the victory. The Yanks remain a game behind the Red Sox.

1946: The rampaging Red Sox (92-40) sweep a pair from the Yankees‚ winning 5-2 and 3-1 at the Stadium. Boo Ferris (below) wins the opener and Mickey Harris takes the nitecap.

1945: The Yankees deny the Senators the chance to go into first place by sweeping a pair from them, 3-2 and 3-1. In between games‚ Nats pitcher Bert Shepard receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in the war. Shepard lost his leg on a mission.

1936: Joe McCarthy consents to Dixie Walker as a temporary substitute while the White Sox patch up Mike Kreevich, who was spiked on a play. Walker runs for Kreevich but does not replace him in the outfield. Recent Yankee acquisition Bob Seeds belts 2 homers‚ and Joe DiMaggio adds another‚ as the Yanks win‚ 5-1. Johnny Broaca wins his 11th‚ scattering 4 hits.

1931: Against the Senators’ Lloyd Brown, Lou Gehrig belts his second grand slam in three days‚ but the Nats hang onto second place by beating the Yankees, 6-5.

1927: The Yankees open a home stand by beating the Red Sox 10-3. Babe Ruth hits
homer no. 43 and now leads Lou Gehrig by 2. With an 89-37 record‚ Murderers’ Row now lead the
2nd-place A’s by 17 games.
