The red-letter day -

2009: After a rainout the night before kept the Anaheim Angels still alive in the ALCS, their string runs out, even if Gary Matthews, Jr.‘s swing and miss at Mariano Rivera’s cutter that ended the game actually occurs at one minute past midnight (and therefore technically October 26). Andy Pettitte pitches into the seventh for the win, Johnny Damon’s 4th-inning two-run double gives the Yanks a lead they will not relinquish, and Mark Teixeira crowns a two-run eighth with a sac fly in the 5-2 Yankee win that sends the club to the World Series for the 40th time. Chuck Mangione played the National Anthem before the game, and Bernie Williams threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

2006: Derek Jeter is named the AL winner of the Hank Aaron Award as best overall hitter. Ryan Howard of the Phillies is the winner for the Senior Circuit.

2003: The Marlins win their second world championship as World Series MVP Josh Beckett hurls a 5-hit shutout in defeating the Yankees 2-0 in Game 6 of the Series. Luis Castillo’s 5th-inning single brings home Florida’s 1st run‚ and the only one Beckett needs as he outduels Andy Pettitte. Thus the Marlins conclude their second winning season in the past 11 years in the same manner in which they
concluded their first winning season.

2000: The Yankees defeat the Mets‚ 3-2‚ to take a commanding 3-games-to-1 lead in the World Series. Derek Jeter homers off Bobby Jones on the 1st pitch of the game for the Bronx Bombers. The Yankee bullpen saves the game with 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Mike Piazza’s 2-run homer accounts for all the Mets scoring.

Off the field, Darryl Strawberry is arrested and jailed after leaving a treatment center following a weekend drug binge.

1981: In World Series action in L.A., back-to-back homers by Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager off Yankee ace Ron Guidry are enough to give the Dodgers their 3rd consecutive win, 2-1.

Off the field, George Steinbrenner scuffles with 2 (he says) fans in a hotel elevator after the game and emerges with a fat lip and a broken hand.

1924: Bobby Brown, Yankee 3rd baseman of the late ’40s and early ’50s, is born. Brown, who graduated from medical school with a specialty in cardiology, also served as AL President after his playing days. Happy 87th to Doctor Bob!
