2006: The Yankees edge the White Sox 6-5, ending Jose Contreras’ streak of 17 consecutive wins that had extended over 2
seasons. It was the 2nd-longest streak in the majors over the last 40
years. Contreras’ last loss came August 15 of last season. longtime Yankee fan favourite Kyle Farnsworth (below), in relief of Randy Johnson, gets the win.
2002: Mariano Rivera shows one of his occasional flashes of mortality, surrendering a walkoff grand slam to Cleveland’s Bill Selby, as the Tribe rally for 6 runs in the 9th inning.
1988: Whitey Witt, starting center fielder on the Yankees’ first World Series championship club of 1923 (and pennant winner of 1922) dies at the age of 92.

1964: Baltimore’s Bob Johnson sets a Major league record by delivering his sixth straight pinch hit in a game against the Yankees, but the Bombers win anyway, 4-3.

1957: Bill ‘Moose’ Skowron of the Yanks hits an ML-record 2nd pinch-hit grand slam of
the season‚ off Jim Wilson of the White Sox‚ in the 2nd game of a
doubleheader. Skowron’s hit comes in the 9th as the Yanks score 6 runs
to win 6-4. The White Sox take the first game 3-1.
1956: At the Stadium‚ New York edges the Indians in 10 innings in Cleveland‚ 5-4. Mickey Mantle deposits a Herb Score fastball in the Indians’ bullpen in the 3rd inning.
1939: The Yankees tie an AL record by registering only one assist, as Red Ruffing tames the Tigers 8-3.
1934: In Detroit‚ Lou Gehrig’s consecutive-game string is extended by having him
lead off and listed in the lineup as shortstop. He singles and leaves
the game‚ and Red Rolfe pinch runs. But the Tigers win a swatfest‚ 12-11‚ to regain
the AL lead. The Tigers bang out an AL record 11 doubles (The 1905 A’s
had the record with 10) while the Yanks add 3‚ while Babe Ruth and Frank Crosetti
chip in with homers. Firpo Marberry beats Burleigh Grimes.

Off the field, an uncredited writer in today’s issue of the New York Times predicts that Babe Ruth’s record of 700 home runs will never be broken.(In 40 years’ time, Henry Aaron will beg to differ.)
1930: At Comiskey Park‚ the White Sox outslug the Yankees 10-9 in the opener before being handcuffed in the second game by Bob Shawkey‚ 7-2. Lou Gehrig homers in each game‚ while Babe Ruth, nursing a sore hand‚ contributes a two run single in the
opener for his only safety. Ben Chapman adds a 4th-inning homer in the nitecap.
1908: Johnny ‘Grandma’ Murphy, Yankee bullpen star who amassed 104 saves for the club between 1932 and 1946, is born.
