2005: The Mets down the Yankees 10-3, as Cliff Floyd (below) backs the pitching of Tom Glavine with two homers. David Wright also has a homer and double. Both teams are now at .500 (37-37).

2003: The Yankees obtain outfielder Karim Garcia (below) and pitcher Dan Miceli from the Indians in exchange for a player to be named later.

1999: In Baltimore’s 9-8 loss to the Yankees‚ the Orioles’ Jesse Orosco makes his 1‚051th relief appearance to break Kent Tekulve’s Major League record. His successor is Mike Tomlin‚ who takes the loss when he serves up a 9th inning HR to Shane Spencer. Harold Baines has a pair of homers for the O’s‚ while Tino Martinez has 4 hits for NY.

1984: At the Stadium‚ Dave Winfield hits 5 singles and drives in 4 runs to lead New York to a 7-3 win over Detroit. Ron Guidry (6-5) is the beneficiary of Winfield’s one-manbarrage. Dave is now hitting .750 against Detroit this year. Winfield has three five-hit games this month‚ tying a record set by Ty Cobb.

1977: Mike Torrez outduels Luis Tiant in the Bronx to give the Yankees a 5-1 win over the Red Sox. A 3-runm homer by Graig Nettles (below) is the big blow. New York now trail the Sox by 3 games.

1971: The Yankees and Expos swap outfielders named Ron, with Mr. Swoboda heading to New York in exchange for Mr. Woods.

1967: Heavyweight contender Joe Frazier say that he wants to hold a clinic to teach baseball players how to fight. “All they do is hurt themselves instead of the other guy‚” he said from his training camp. “Look at Joe Pepitone. He banged up his hands without getting a punch across. Baseball players should know about combinations as well as double plays.” Frazier said he would hold a clinic on a day when the Yankees are off.

1961: Roger Maris contributes to an 8-4 Yankee win at Minnesota with his 40th home run of the campaign thus far.

1953: The White Sox complete a three-game sweep of the Yankees with a 4-2 win, Chicago skipper Paul Richards using a record five different players at first base in the process. The Bombers still have a nine-game lead in the League even after the three days of futility.

1934: Yankee pitcher Johnny Broaca fans 5 times in a row while beating the White Sox 13-2. Not until Bernie Williams‚ on August 21‚ 1991‚ will another Yankee fan 5 times (all at the hand of Bret Saberhagen). Lou Gehrig hits for the cycle for the first time in his career‚ and the Yankees  regain first place from the Tigers‚ losers 13-11 in Philadelphia.

1930: The 3rd-place Yankees sweep a pair from the Browns‚ winning 5-4 and 16-4. Sam Byrd has a single‚ double and triple in the opener to pace New York‚ and Babe Ruth hits #25 and #26 in the nitecap to back Red Ruffing’s pitching.

1915: In Boston Babe Ruth his 3rd homer of the year‚ off New York’s Ray Caldwelll‚ and is the second player to hit a ball into the right field seats at Fenway. Ruth strikes out 8 in pitching a complete game‚ 9-5‚ win‚ and adds a single off reliever Bill Donovan‚ Yankee skipper and his former manager.

1904: In Boston‚ the Highlanders’ Jack Chesbro (below)  wins his 12th straight‚ besting Cy Young 5-3. Patsy Dougherty has 3 hits against his former teammates.

1903: At South Side Park in Chicago, the Highlanders and the White Sox battle to a 6-6 tie in 18 innings. The two teams rack up 30 hits between them before the contest is called because of darkness.
