6/27 in Yankee History

2008: A busy day as the Yankees manoeuvre frantically to save the ’08 season, which is rapidly going awry. First, the badly misused but talented righthander Ross Ohlendorf (below) is optioned to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with Kei Igawa recalled from AAA to take his spot. Then the hobbled Hideki Matsui is placed on the 15-day disabled list. Finally, the contract of Sidney Ponson is purchased from AA Trenton so that he can take his place in the rotation alongside the likes of Darrel Rasner.

2003: At the Stadium, the Mets tie the Yanks 5-5 in the sixth inning on a Tony Clark home run, but Raul Mondesi knocks
in the game-winner in a 6-5 win for the home team. Dan Miceli also registers the only save of his tenure in pinstripes.

2001: The Yanks come out smoking against Cleveland rookie C.C. Sabathia, racing to a 10-2 lead after four on 13 hits including a Tino Martinez home run. Mike Mussina coasts to the 15-5 victory.

1986: The Blue Jays come from behind to beat the Yankees 14-7‚ despite outhitting the Yanks by only 19 to 18. Damasco Garcia has a record-tying 4 doubles for the Jays.

1978: Graig Nettles belts a two-run homer in the 14th to give the Yankees a 6-4 win over the Red Sox. Dick Drago serves up Nettles’ 13th circuit shot of the year. Sparky Lyle (6-1) wins in relief of Ron Guidry, who scattered 8 hits over 6 innings of work.

1963: Chicago’s Ray Herbert allows 5 singles to in beating the Yankees 6-0‚ to give the Sox a virtual tie for first. The Sox batter youthful pitching star Jim Bouton (10-3) for all their runs in the first 5 innings.

1952: At the Stadium‚ Mickey Mantle unloads a first inning homer off Bob Hooper, and the Yankees roll to a 10-0 rout of the A’s.

1949: Joe DiMaggio goes hitless but plays without pain for the first time this year, against the Giants in the Mayor’s Trophy game. At this point the Yankees have played 65 games without the Clipper‚ but are in first place by 4 1/2 games over the A’s and 5 ahead of Boston.

1918: The Red Sox pound out 17 hits against starter George Mogridge (below) and the rest of the Yankee bullpen, and still lose 7-5. New York take over first place.

1904: Patsy Dougherty has another 3 hits as the Highlanders beat their old teammate Jesse Tannehill (below) and Boston‚ 8-4. Boston lead the AL by just a half game. ‘Long Tom’ Hughes will win tomorrow to stretch the lead to 1 1/2 games.
