1990: California post a 9-5 win over the Yankees, the winning margin coming on an inside-the-park grand slam by Luis Polonia. Yankee right fielder Jesse Barfield misses a shoe string catch and his leisurely pursuit of the ball allows Polonia to score. Jim Abbott is the winner. Barfield will misplay another drive into an inside-the-park salami 2 weeks hence.

Mickey Mantle helps with a homer‚ off lefty Jack Kralick, but he’ll sit the next 12 days after reinjuring his knee.

1960: The Yankees lose a doubleheader to Washington and fall to third place in the AL‚ 1/2 game behind the Orioles and the White Sox. Pitcher Camilo Pascual’s grand slam is the difference in a 5-4 first-game win. In the second, Mickey Mantle, believing there are 2 outs‚ jogs to first on a grounder to third. The Senators turn a double play, with Roger Maris suffering bruised ribs trying to break it up at second. Maris will miss 18 games as a result. Mantle is roundly booed‚ and Casey Stengel replaces him with Bob Cerv. The clubs set an ML record by using 17 pinch hitters – 9 by the Yankees – in the doubleheader (more than 18 innings)‚ while playing a record 24
