1998: The Yankees close out one of the greatest years in the club’s history by shutting out the Padres 3-0‚ and completing a sweep of the NL champs to win the World Series. Andy Pettitte gets the victory‚ and Scott Brosius is named Series MVP.

2003: The Yankees beat the Marlins 6-1 behind the pitching of Mike Mussina and the hitting of Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams to take a 2-1 Series lead. Jeter gets 3 hits off losing starter Josh Beckett (the only hits Beckett allows)‚ while Williams and Aaron Boone hit home runs. Williams’ blast is his record 19th in postseason play. His 65 RBI are also a new postseason mark.

2001: The Yankees take a 3-1 lead in the ALCS‚ defeating the Mariners by a score of 3-1. Bret Boone’s 8th inning homer breaks a scoreless tie‚ but Bernie Williams hits a homer in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score. New York win on Alfonso Soriano’s 2-run dinger in the 9th. Mariano Rivera gets the victory in relief.

2000: The Yankees defeat the Mets‚ 4-3 in 12 innings in Game 1 of the World Series. The longest game in Series history in terms of time (4 hours‚ 51 minutes) is ended by Jose Vizcaino’s single which drives home Tino Martinez. It is Vizcaino’s 4th hit of the night. The Mets lead 3-2 going into the 9th‚ but Armando Benitez surrenders the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Chuck Knoblauch. The victory is the Yankees’ 13th in a row in Series play, a new record. Todd Pratt of the Mets ties a Series mark by being hit by pitches 2 times.

1996: At the Stadium, Greg Maddux shuts out the Yankees by a score of 4-0‚ as the Braves open up a 2 games to none World Series lead. Fred McGriff’s 3 RBI give him a major league record 15 for the postseason.

1981: Goose Gossage gets his 2nd save in as many days as he preserves Tommy John’s win 3-0 in game 2. Bob Watson has two hits and an RBI.

Off the field, Gene Robertson, who took over at third base on the 1928 championship team when Joe Dugan went down with an injury, dies at the age of 82.

1976: The Reds take a 3-0 lead against Ed Figueroa‚ but the Yankees close the gap to 3-2. A 4-run splurge in the 9th‚ topped by Johnny Bench’s second HR of the game‚ ices the Reds’ 7-2 win‚ completing a 4-game sweep of the Yankees. World Series MVP Johnny Bench has 2 HRs and 5 RBI‚ and demolishes the Yankees with a .533 average. Opposing catcher Thurman Munson had 6 straight singles to tie a WS mark. The 1976 Reds become the firstteam ever to go through an entire LCS and WS without a defeat.

1934: An all-star team captained by Babe Ruth and managed by Connie Mack sets sail for a tour of Hawaii and Japan. Other Yankees along for the ride in the company of their wives include Lou Gehrig and Lefty Gomez.
