10/22 in Yankee History

2010: The Yankees season comes to an end as Texas close out the ALCS with a 6-1 6th game triumph. A 4-run 5th for the Rangers, keyed by a 2-run Nelson Cruz HR, is the turning point. Alex Rodriguez takes the final strike looking, and the Rangers advance to their first fall classic.

2009: With a chance to close out the ALCS, A.J. Burnett has a rough first inning in Anaheim, giving up four runs, then toughens up and delivers four solid frames. Then, punctuated by Robbie Cano’s 2-run triple, the Yanks plate six in the top of the sixth. But A.J. allows two to reach leading off the bottom half, and the Angels touch up Phil Hughes for a walk and two singles, and the three runs gave Anaheim a 7-6 lead which their bullpen will hold. The Yanks load the bases with two outs in the ninth but Nick Swisher pops out to short to send the series back to New York with the Yanks up 3 games to 2.

2003: The Yankees make a classic postseason comeback, crowned by a two-out, two-run, ninth-inning triple by Ruben Sierra  that ties the Marlins at three. Young Miguel Cabrera keys a three-run Florida first with his two-run home run off Roger Clemens after the Rocket had knocked him down, and the Yanks spend the whole game in the hole. But ALCS hero Aaron Boone fails in the 11th, striking out against Braden Looper with the bases loaded and one down. Jeff Weaver relieves and retires the side in the bottom half, but Alex Gonzalez homers off him on a 3-2 pitch leading off the 12th. The Marlins win 4-3, and the Series is tied at two games apiece.

2000: The Yankees defeat the Mets 6-5 behind Roger Clemens to take a 2-games-to-none lead in the World Series. The Mets score 5 runs in the 9th inning on HRs by Mike Piazza and Jay Payton to throw a scare into the Bombers. In a bizarre incident‚ Clemens throws a piece of a shattered bat at Piazza in the 1st inning‚ as both benches clear. It is the first meeting between the two players since Clemens beaned Piazza during the regular season. On Tuesday‚ Clemens will be fined $50‚000 for his actions.
